Beneficial use and recycling of organic and mineral resources

Resource Optimization

Our mission is to be the leading provider of safe, economical and environmentally sustainable residual management services for the benefit of our customers, our employees, our investors and the communities we serve.

In business since 1983, we are a company focused on resource optimization through the reuse of residuals and organic wastes, including: municipal biosolids; paper mill sludge and ash; power plant fly ash, food processing waste; yard waste, and source separated organics (SSO).  Driven by the goal to create products for sale and distribution, we have sold over 2,500,000 cubic yards of compost under our earthlife brand; provided hundreds of thousands of tons of fertilizer and soil amendments to farmers; and utilized recycled soil products to reclaim thousands of acres damaged by mining, landfills, and industrial contamination.  Headquartered in Portland, Maine, New England Organics provides professional services to over 80 clients and manages over 700,000 tons of residual material annually, with operations located throughout New England and New York.  New England Organics is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Casella Waste Systems, Inc.

History

New England Organics was founded in Maine in 1983 as Resource Conservation Services, Inc.  Our company began its work by pioneering the use of wood ash as an agricultural product. As our programs evolved, we worked with other papermill residuals, and soon with waste water treatment residuals.  In 1990, we opened our Hawk Ridge Compost facility, the largest commercial biosolids compost facility in New England.  In 1991 the company was sold to Browning Ferris Industries (BFI) and became BFI Organics.  In 1998 Allied Waste purchased all of BFI, including BFI Organics.  In the year 2000, Casella Waste Systems, Inc. purchased BFI Organics and renamed the company New England Organics. Since that time, Casella has integrated New England Organics approach to organics recycling and disposal into every region of the company.
